Software Engineer Salary: UAE vs India (2026) — Tax-Free Pay, Cost & Savings Compared

“The salary is tax-free.” That’s the one line everyone gives you about moving to the UAE as a software engineer — and it’s true. But it was the least useful part of my decision. I’m an Indian engineer now based in Abu Dhabi, and this is the honest, balanced comparison I wish someone had put in a spreadsheet for me. Neither country is “better” — they’re different trade-offs.

Take-home pay: the tax gap is real

The UAE has 0% personal income tax — your gross salary is your net. (The country funds itself through 5% VAT and a 9% corporate tax on business profits above AED 375,000; neither touches your paycheck.) In India’s new regime, salaried income up to roughly ₹12.75 lakh is effectively tax-free thanks to the rebate and standard deduction — but above about ₹24 lakh, every additional rupee is taxed at 30% plus cess. So at junior levels the tax gap is modest; at senior packages it becomes significant. What you’re quoted in the UAE is what lands in your account.

Salary: what the numbers actually say

Ballparks, because these vary enormously by employer and level: a Dubai software engineer’s median total comp is around AED 300,000/year (~AED 22,000/month), tax-free, with AI/ML and fintech paying a 15–40% premium. In Bengaluru, the average sits near ₹13 LPA pre-tax, but the top decile — product companies, FAANG, global capability centres — goes far higher. Employer tier is the single biggest variable on both sides; an IT-services role and a product role are different planets.

Cost of living: where the tax saving goes

Here’s the part the “tax-free” headline hides. Dubai runs roughly 70% more expensive than Bangalore, and rent is the dominant gap — a city-centre one-bedroom can be several times the Bangalore equivalent. A single professional in Dubai can still save around AED 6,000–8,000/month; for a family, roughly AED 25,000/month is the comfortable line. Whether you truly save more than in India is genuinely person-dependent — housing, schooling and lifestyle decide it, not the tax rate alone.

The job market is a different shape

India’s tech ecosystem is enormous: roughly 5.8 million direct industry workers and a ~$300B industry, with deep product and services layers and relentless DSA-heavy hiring. The UAE market is far smaller but growing fast, anchored by the National AI Strategy 2031 and Dubai’s D33 agenda — the hottest roles are AI/ML, cloud, DevOps and cybersecurity, and much of the work is client- or project-driven with a product scene that’s still emerging. Different bets, not better versus worse.

The quieter factors

Two things rarely make the spreadsheet. First, the Golden Visa — 10-year renewable residency, family included, no employer sponsor — changed how I think long-term; it removes the “my life is tied to one job” anxiety that shapes so many expat decisions. Second, the cost that has no number: you’re building a life away from home and roots. That one is real, and only you can price it.

So, is it worth moving?

For me, yes — the tax-free upside, the AI-focused market, and the long-term stability lined up with where I want my career to go. But I’d never tell another engineer it’s a universal win. If you’re early-career at a strong Indian product company, your growth and equity there can beat a mid-level UAE move. If you’re mid-to-senior, want higher take-home, and are drawn to the UAE’s AI push, it’s a genuinely strong option. Run your numbers, not the headline.
